

Betty Jane Schmahl, formerly of Rhein Avenue, died at Woodlawn Health Care and Rehabilitation on February 27, 2005, at age 85, after an extended illness. She was born December 16, 1919 in Ashland, Ohio to John Carl Smalley and Mary Lucille Helbert Smalley, who preceded her in death. After graduating from Hayesville High School in 1937, and working in Ashland, she moved to Mansfield in 1940. During WWII, Betty worked for the Ohio Brass. She then worked for United Telephone Company in Mansfield for 14 years in revenue accounting, before retiring in 1983. Betty was a member of the Main Street United Methodist Church in Mansfield.
Betty is survived by her husband of 65 years, Carl John Schmahl; her daughters, Judith Ann Mrs. David Kibler of Boerne, Texas, and Deborah Kay Mrs. Steve Ritchey of Mansfield; sisters, Helen Allene Sigler of Toledo, Ohio, and Mary Anne Culp of Waukee, Iowa; grandchildren, Melissa Susanne Mrs. Donald Knoll of Clarendon Hills, Illinois, Matthew David Kibler of Sacramento, California, Amanda Karoline Mrs. Jeremy Townley of Portland, Oregon, and Andrew Patrick Ritchey of Mansfield; and great grandson, Alexander Hale Knoll of Clarendon Hills, Illinois.
Friends may call from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 4, 2005 at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 5 at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park. Those who desire may send memorial contributions to the Main Street United Methodist Church or the charity of the donor's choice.
