"It is so much darker when a light goes out than it would have been if it had never shown". Chris Reining, 92, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 27, 2018 after a brief illness. Always up for an adventure, we know he is joyfully exploring Heaven.
Chris was born on April 17, 1926 to Christ and Gertrude (Matthes) Reining of Mansfield, Ohio. Chris graduated from Madison High School in 1944 where he listed his favorite past time as eating doughnuts, a lifelong passion. He entered the United States Army and served as a combat engineer in General Patton's 3rd Army, with a specialty in bridge building in World War II. During his time in the service, he was awarded two Bronze Service Stars and The Purple Heart. He married his high school sweetheart, Marjorie (Bell) Reining, on November 29, 1947.
Chris was a man who lived life to the fullest. He never met a stranger, making friends wherever he went. He founded Reining Painters and Decorators in 1948. He was an avid boater and life member of the Mansfield Power Squadron. He was a Free Mason for over 65 years. As a member of the Mid Ohio Winnebagos, he and his wife Marjorie camped in each of the lower 48 states and all of Ohio state parks. Chris instilled a love of traveling in his children and grandchildren starting when they were very young by taking them on "mystery rides", providing them with memories that will never be forgotten. In his later years, he enjoyed helping maintain the bike trail. He found joy in spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and their many special events.
He will greatly be missed by his son, Phil (Kathy) Reining of Lucas; daughter, Denise (Denny) Tenison of Lexington; grandchildren, Jenifer (Andy) Culler, Eric (Megan) Reining, Andrew Tension, and Christina Tension; great-grandchildren, Aidan, Olyvia, Piper, and Owen; sister-in-law, Jean Denig; nephew, Dan Seitz; and nieces, Marilee Kastran and Jill Grundhoefer. He had a multitude of friends, too many to name, all who held a special place in his heart. Chris was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie; his parents; sister, Carol Seitz; brothers-in-law, Dick Seitz and Robert Denig.
Family and friends may visit on Thursday, November 1, 2018 from 5:00-7:00 pm at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 98 S. Diamond Street. Dr. David Aune will officiate the funeral service on Friday, November 2, 2018 at 10:30 am in the funeral home. Burial will follow in Mt. Zion Cemetery with full military honors. Special thank you to the staff of Wedgewood Estates for their care and friendship. Memorial contributions may be made to OhioHealth Hospice.
