Christine Wappner, age 93, of Munising, Michigan, and formerly of Mansfield, Ohio, passed away Friday, January 19, 2018, at Munising Memorial Hospital. She was born in Crvenka, Yugoslavia, on October 22, 1924, to the late Jacob and Luisa (Schmitt) Paul.
During WWII, Christine's family was moved from place to place, not always knowing where they were going, and ended up in Germany. In the early 1950s, she was sponsored by an American family in Ohio, moving to live with and work for the Hattery and Siegenthaler families. While working, Christine met and married the love of her life, Eugene Wappner, on September 20, 1958. Sadly, Eugene preceded Christine and their young daughter, Linda, in death in 1964.
Christine worked hard to provide her daughter every opportunity and provide herself with all she needed. In the late 1970s, she began working as a laborer at the Emerson and Therm-O-Disc factory, while still working with the Siegenthaler family. Her loyalty to the Siegenthalers and her dear friends, Nancy, Olga and Tina at the factory kept her working until she retired from both jobs in 2007 at the age of 83. Christine enjoyed working in her garden, and was very meticulous about cutting the lawn always making sure the lines were perfect. She attended "Club" with Alger commission on Aging, where she was not only lovingly cared for, but she also finally had time to play games. Christine was a resident at Harbour View Assisted Living, and her family wants to thank the staff for their compassionate care.
She is survived by her daughter, Linda Wappner of Wetmore, MI; a sister-in-law, Marie Wappner; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Eugene; and nine brothers and sisters.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 5, 2018 at the Life Celebration Reception Center, 129 S. Main St., Mansfield. She will be laid to rest in Mansfield Cemetery.
