

Daniel P. Cleland, 91, of Mansfield, died Sunday, May 30, 2010, at MedCentral Mansfield. Born February 19, 1919, in Mansfield, he was the son of Dr. Evan F. and Mary E. "Mamie" Piper Cleland. He was a graduate of Madison High School where he was an outstanding running back and had attended Baldwin Wallace College. Mr. Cleland retired from the United States Postal Service in Mansfield, starting as a mail carrier and finishing as the Superintendent of Mails ending his 33 years of service. He enjoyed breeding, raising and racing harness horses, was involved in the conservation of wildlife and also enjoyed domesticated pets.
Surviving are a son, Thomas Daniel (Diane) Cleland; a daughter, Mary Jane Cleland; six grandchildren, Michelle (Jeff) Stair, Thomas (Kelly) Cleland, Stephen (Lynn) Cleland, Samantha (Sean) Wiley, John (Amy) Cleland and Timothy Cleland; 13 great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and his special friend, Zipper Cleland. He was preceded in death by his wife, Emma Jane (Martin) Cleland; his parents; three sisters, Ruth Kirgis, Barbara Rimmer and Rebecca Cleland; and his special friend, Basil Cleland.
Family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 5, 2010, at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 98 S. Diamond Street, Mansfield. Commital services will be conducted at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Kingwood Center or to the Ohio Bird Sanctuary.
