Dorothy (Dottie) Horton Mowry, age 77, of Mansfield, Ohio passed away peacefully at home on early Sunday morning July 26, 2026, under the care of Pathways Hospice. Dottie was born on May 31, 1949, to Mildred Horton.
Dottie attended Creveling and Appleseed schools and graduated from Mansfield Senior in 1967. Her first best friend was her brother Fred. The two grew up on Buckingham Street and were involved at the Friendly House with the Gimbles. The family later moved to Millsboro Road, near Linden pool, where she met great friends, Sharon Merchdorf and Mignon Bush. The three girls were in the Debette Club and attended dances at the Friendly House.
Dottie married young and raised two daughters and two sons. Dottie and the family were part of Happy Hollow and Hidden Hollow and spent many summers there. She worked at the Mansfield News Journal for many years, where she retired from in 2004. When she wasn’t working, you could find her doing a craft. She was very talented in art, drawing, and painting and loved to do puzzles and sew. She enjoyed traveling with her husband Larry on vacations to visit out of state family. Dottie was baptized at Bellville New Life Church in 2000, which is also the year she married Larry. The two married on March 4, 2000. She loved the Lord and began going to Berean Baptist Church in 2020, where she and Larry formed lifelong friendships.
Dottie is survived by her husband of 26 years, Larry Mowry; brother, Fred “Fritz” (Ann) Horton; children, Stephanie (Joe) Richter, Greg (Susan) Elliott, Bobby Elliott, and Alicia (Chad) Myers; stepchildren, Brian (Pat) Mowry and Laura (Tom) Constance; grandchildren, Jessica, Kristen, Justin, Christian, Katie, Ethan, Sophia, Oaklin, Kayleigh, Carson, and Taylor; and 15 great grandchildren.
Friends and family can meet on Wednesday July 29, 2026, at 12:45 PM at Wappner Funeral Directors, 98 S. Diamond Street, Mansfield, Ohio to prosses to Manfield Cemetery, 389 Altamont Ave., Mansfield, Ohio for the 1:00 PM graveside service. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Friendly House, 380 N. Mulberry Street, Mansfield, OH 44903.
