
Earle J. Deems, 88, of Mansfield, died Wednesday, January 9, 2008 at home. He was born October 24, 1919 on a farm just west of Mansfield, to Earle L. and Rachel Dickson Deems. During his preschool years he lived on the James Dickson property on Stewart Lane where he was able to observe the development of Woodland. In later years, he lived in the Woodland Gardens Apartments, directly across the street from where he spent his boyhood. He attended Mansfield schools and Ashland University. Earle entered the Army in April 1942 and spent four years in the service. Twenty-five months of this time were served in the South Pacific where he attained the rank of Captain. As a Major, he was transferred to the Retired Reserve in December 1962. Earle was formerly employed by T & A Saveway Markets. He more recently was president of Highway Safety Films, a company which distributed safety motion pictures world wide. Earle was a member of the First Christian Church, a life member of B.P.O. Elks #56, a life member of AMVETS #26, and a member of the American Legion Post #16, and Richland County Foundation.
He is survived by a dear friend, Victoria A. Zack, and several cousins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, "Dottie" Vaughn Deems on February 14, 1985.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, January 15, 2008 at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors conducted by Rev. Chris Whitehead. Friends may call from 12 to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Military graveside services conducted by the Richland County Joint Veteran's Burial Detail will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park.
