Edward P. Kinkel, 84, of Mansfield, died Thursday, March 16, 2006 at Lexington Court Care Center after an extended illness. He was born to Mary Haring and Peter J. Kinkel on June 21, 1921 in Mansfield. Mr. Kinkel joined the Boy Scouts as a child, played football for the Mansfield Tygers for four years and graduated in January 1941. In September 1941, he was inducted into the Army, where he was a cook and baker. Ed married Frieda Keck on June 4, 1944. He received an honorable discharge in 1945. After the war, he worked at his father's butcher shop at P.J. Kinkel & Sons in the old Third Street Market. Many people will remember Ed greeting everyone with a smile and often a free sample of baked ham. While Ed and Frieda raised a family, he found time to be an assistant Scout Master to Troop 4 for two years. His sons loved horses and he loved watching his children, nephews, and later grandchildren participating in 4H and horse shows. Ed loved meeting people and loved the Lord, so it was only natural that he would be an usher at church, and because he loved children, he soon became the 'gum man'. After the market closed, Ed worked for the US Post Office before becoming a Federal Meat Inspector. He spent his retirement years taking care of his disabled wife and focused on his grandchildren. He went to their ball games, horse shows, concerts, plays, and for years would take them to church camp. Ed spent the last six years lovingly cared for by the staff at Lexington Court Care Center. He shared a room with his wife until her death in 2005. He still kept his cheerful nature even though he could only speak a few words.
Edward is survived by his three children, David Sylvia Kinkel of Mansfield, Ed Shellique Kinkel Jr. of Shelby, and Dianne Marc Schiler of Pasadena, California; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two brothers, William Arietta Kinkel of Mansfield, and Allen Betty Kinkel of Phoenix, Arizona; and two sisters, Ida and Arthur Popp of Portland, Oregon, and Martha and Benjamin Zimmerman of Ontario. He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; and brother, John Kinkel.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 24, 2006 at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors.
