
Edward William "Bill" McCarrick, 85, of Mansfield, died Thursday, June 19, 2008 at his home. Born March 7, 1923 in Mansfield, he was the son of James A. and Mabel Fisher McCarrick. He was a 1941 graduate of Mansfield Senior High School. He retired from Columbia Gas where he worked as a service man. Bill was a devoted family man who had a love of flowers, being a charter member who remained active with the Mansfield Men's Garden Club for 54 years. He gave much of himself to the City of Mansfield as evidenced through his participation in city government serving as 3rd Ward Councilman, Councilman-At-Large, and President of City Council. He served on the Board of Trustees of The Richland County Foundation. He also was a trustee for 10 years and a strong supporter of Kingwood Center. He spearheaded the preservation of Oakhill Cottage and the Ohio State Reformatory supervising the landscaping at both facilities. Bill was a member of the Mansfield Bicentennial Committee, Masonic Lodge, Baku Grotto and numerous other civic organizations. Bill was extremely active in the Democratic Party and was currently a member of the Airport Commission. As a young man he played semi-pro baseball trying out for the Cleveland Indians and Chicago Cubs. He also played fast pitch softball for Gorman Rupp, coached Little League, and was an avid sports fan especially of the Cleveland Indians.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Katherine Hallabrin McCarrick; daughter, Sally Heckert Richard Uhde of Johnstown; son, J. Rick Judy Heckert of Mansfield; five grandchildren, Mindy Heckert Rich Willman, Scott Heather Heckert, Chris Lisa Heckert, Jeffrey Vivien Uhde and Kimberly Uhde David Barboza; twelve great-grandchildren; a brother, John McCarrick of Mansfield; and sister, Jean Cushing of Mansfield. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, James, Jack and Robert; two sisters, Fran Glasscock and Mary Shipp; and two great-grandchildren.
Friends may call from Sunday, June 22 from 2-6 p.m. at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors. Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m., Monday at the funeral home with Rev. Paul Lintern officiating. Burial will follow in Mansfield Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made payable to the Richland County Foundation, c/o William and Katherine J. McCarrick Fund, a fund which supports Kingwood Center.
