She was born on July 20, 1945, to the late William and Mildred Greenwald Jr. Elaine devoted her life to learning, service, and caring for others. A dedicated Registered Nurse for more than 45 years, she was especially known for her love of direct patient care and her deep compassion for those she served.
Elaine received her nursing training at Mount Carmel Hospital in Columbus. Her passion for education extended beyond nursing, as she earned a master’s degree in chemistry from The Ohio State University. Her distinguished career included serving as Head of Surgery at OSU, a role that reflected both her leadership and the respect she earned from colleagues and patients alike.
In addition to her medical career, Elaine was an accomplished concert pianist who performed throughout Ohio, sharing her exceptional musical talent with audiences across the state.
Elaine enjoyed traveling with her husband, Gale, whom she married on September 18, 1990, and cherished time spent exploring the country together. Among her favorite destinations were Yosemite and Yellowstone National Parks. She also enjoyed gambling trips to Nevada and was an avid reader throughout her life, always eager to learn and discover something new.
Elaine is survived by her husband, Gale; daughter, Julie (Craig) Campanelli; two grandchildren, April (Jamie) Stumpo and Anthony (Jude) Campanelli; two great-grandchildren, Benjamin and Avalyn; and many cherished family and friends.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded by her brothers, Blair Greenwald and Billy Greenwald; best friend, Janet Johnson; and close friend, Marvel Maze.
A Gathering will be held on Thursday, January 15, 2026, at Wappner Funeral Directors-Mansfield, 98 S. Diamond Street from 2pm to 4pm. Memorial contributions may be made in Elaine’s honor to The American Heart Association.
