
Frederick Gustav Rehberg, 71, of Mansfield, died Wednesday, January 23, 2008 at Mt. Carmel West Hospital in Columbus. He died peacefully, surrounded by his family. He was born September 16, 1936 in Mansfield, and spent his entire life here. A U.S. Navy veteran, Fred served aboard the USS Kula Gulf. He retired after 36 years from General Motors in Ontario and served many offices in the UAW Local #549, including president and vice-president. He also served as the UAW benefits representative. Fred was a member of Ontario Amvets Post #31, the Buckeye Stein Verein, Stein Collectors International, and the Mansfield Liederkranz. His family and friends were blessed by Fred's many talents which he shared generously with everyone. Besides being a fine artist, woodworker and musician, he enjoyed bowling and golf. He loved nothing more than being with all of his family who will indeed miss his gentle presence, love, and kindness which he continued to shower on them even as his illness became increasingly difficult over the last few years.
Fred is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Joyce Shaum Rehberg; loving sister, Hermina "Minnie" Lyons of Stockbridge, Georgia; three sons, Derek John and wife, Tammy Conley of Mt. Gilead, Lance Warren of Lexington, and Vincent Frederick and wife, Jennifer Steele of Shelby; daughter, Lori Kay Barnett and husband, David of Lexington; six grandchildren, Stephen Rehberg and wife Sandra Bolin, Frederick "Ricky" Rehberg and wife, Tracy Casteel, Dara Rehberg, Kelsey and David Barnett, and Warren Rehberg; 12 great-grandchildren, Janessa, Xavier, Reina, Nicolas, Nathan, Aiden, Tyler, Owen, Alexis, Kynlee, Kambry, and Karsyn; niece, Vikki Lyons Pfaff of Grove City; three nephews, Troy Lyons and wife, Cristy Weller of Yorktown, Virginia, Blake "Chip" Lyons and wife, Victoria Forrey of Gray, Georgia, and Terry Lyons of McDonough, Georgia; six great nieces and nephews; two step-grandchildren, William Howell, and Charity Edwards; and many dear family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frances and Gustav Rehberg.
Family and friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday, January 26, 2008 at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the funeral home conducted by Rev. Herman Copley. Military honors will follow the service conducted by the Richland County Joint Veteran's Burial Detail. Interment will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the hospice of the donor’s choice or the American Diabetes Association.
