
George Quinton Boyd, 86, of Mansfield, died Wednesday, November 7, 2007 at MedCentral Mansfield Hospital. A long time Mansfield area resident, he was born February 23, 1921 in Swords Creek, VA, the son of John H. and Melissa Robinson Boyd. He retired from Empire Detroit Steel. George attended Westwood Alliance Church and the Mansfield Baptist Temple. George was a WWII Army veteran serving 4 years overseas as a Military Police Sergeant and had the distinct honor of escorting the body of President Franklin D. Roosevelt for burial in 1945. He was an honorary member of the United Steel Workers of America and former member of Amvets Post #26. George enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He never met a stranger and was always there to help a friend or neighbor when needed.
He is survived by his wife, Juanita Compton Boyd; two sons, Gary Judy Boyd of Mansfield and Keith Boyd of Westerville; grandchildren, Brian Colleen Boyd of Johnstown, Derek Deanna Boyd of Wooster, Jonathan, Casey fiancée, Meghan Johnson and Dillon Boyd of Westerville, and Erin Slusher of Mansfield; great-grandchildren, Ryan Quinton Boyd and Emily Boyd, both of Wooster; two brothers, James M. Boyd of Richmond, VA and Clarence Boyd of Pine Creek, VA; twin sister, Alice Plaster of Akron; two sisters, Janie Peterson of Suffolk, VA and Pauline Tamenello of Baltimore, MD; and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were two sons, Larry H. Boyd on October 1, 1998 and Michael W. Boyd on September 24, 2001, his parents, five sisters and two brothers.
Friends may call from 5-8 p.m., Monday, November 12 at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors. Funeral services conducted by Pastor Doyle Peyton will be 11:00 Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park with military rites by Richland County Joint Veteran's Burial Detail. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
