
Gordon Leroy "Fergie" Ferguson, 83, of Mansfield, died Sunday, July 10, 2011 at his residence. He was a 1946 graduate of Mansfield Senior High. Immediately following graduation, he entered the United States Army, serving in Tokyo, Japan during peacetime. After the service, Fergie traveled across the United States working odd jobs as he traveled. His favorite job was as supervisor of a cattle ranch in Reno, Nevada. Upon settling in his home town of Mansfield, Fergie worked as a painter, doing snow removal for the City of Mansfield, laborer for Mansfield Tire, Shoemaker Construction and as a cable splicer for United Telephone Company. Fergie loved to read since early childhood and enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and especially enjoyed the companionship of his dog, Wiskers.
He is survived by his close friends and second family, Richard and Linda Swisher and their sons Matthew and Benjamin. He was preceded in death by his father, Clyde F. Ferguson and his mother, Rhea Fay Ferguson.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, July 18, 2011 at the Diamond Hill Cathedral conducted by Rev. Roger Garrison. Burial will follow in Windsor Park Cemetery where full military honors will be conducted by the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail. Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army.
