
He was a 1952 graduate of The Ohio State University with a degree in journalism. A career in television advertising included management positions with WBNS-TV and then the NBC network serving in stations in Philadelphia and Cleveland. In 1970 he became Vice-President with Odell Advertising, running the Mansfield office until his retirement in the 1990s.
Jack was a longtime member of the Westbrook Country Club, serving as club President twice. During his 40 years in the Mansfield area, he was active in the Richland County Historical Society, aiding in the restoration of Oak Hill cottage, the Mansfield Men's Garden Club and most recently the Mansfield Power Squadron, which he was a past commander. For many years, he was one of the guiding forces behind the Mansfield Freedom Festival, held July 4th holidays at the airport. He also was a member of the Elks Lodge #56 and the AmVets.
He was a veteran, serving as a Captain in the Air Force stationed at Bentwaters airbase in Great Britain during the 1950s. He would later serve in the Civil Air Patrol at Don Scott Field in Columbus. He was a member of the Air Force Association.
He is survived by his sons, Kent Linda of Mansfield and Clark Barbara of Greenwich; brother, Richard Kathy of Kent; grandchildren, Melissa McKinniss Heath, Justin Ashley, Katherine and great-grandson, Garrett McKinniss. He was preceded in death by a brother, TJ Dorr and his wife of 57 years, Jeanne Goslee Dorr who passed July 20, 2009.
Memorial services will be held at 4:00 p.m. Sunday October 4th 2009 at the Diamond Street of Wappner Funeral Directors, 98 S. Diamond St., Mansfield, conducted by Rev. Warren A. Warner. Friends may call one hour prior to the services at the funeral home on Sunday.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations in memory of H.E. Jack Dorr be made to the Richland County Historical Society/Oak Hill Cottage, 310 Springmill St. Mansfield, OH 44903.
