He was born April 7, 1940, in Richlands, Virginia to the late Reece and Elsie Barrett. He grew up in Morrow County on the family farm. Jack graduated from Mt. Gilead High School in 1958 and served in the US Air Force.
He married Patricia E. (Yingling) Barrett on November 4, 1967, at Central United Methodist Church in Mansfield, Ohio. Jack met the love of his life while working as a programmer at Lumbermen's Mutual Insurance. They shared 44 wonderful years of marriage until Patricia's passing in 2011.
Jack dedicated 31 years to MedCentral/OhioHealth Mansfield, where he served as Chief Information Officer. Throughout his career, he was respected for his leadership, dedication, and commitment to serving others.
An avid outdoorsman, Jack was a lifetime member of the NRA and found great joy in hunting, spending time in the woods, and visiting the shooting range with his sons and grandchildren. He was passionate about mentoring young athletes, serving as the Lucas Schools track and field throws coach for more than 40 years. He was also a founding member and current president of the Lucas Schools Sustaining Fund, where he worked tirelessly to support future generations of students and educators.
A man of deep faith and service, Jack was a former member of Central United Methodist Church and later an active member of Mt. Zion Lutheran Church in Lucas, Ohio, where he faithfully served as a past council president. He and Patricia were devoted members of the Lucas Athletic Boosters Club, supporting the community and its athletes. In his younger years, Jack played semi-professional football for the Clear Fork Wheels. He was also a member of the ATA (American Trapshooters Association) and generously volunteered countless hours at the Lucas Area Food Pantry, always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need.
Jack is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Jeff (Robin) Barrett, Jonathan (Vanessa) Barrett; grandchildren, Cole (Hayley) Barrett, Emily (Taylor) Priest, Nate Barrett (Phyllis), Grant Barrett (Maggie), and Hope Barrett (Peyton); great granddaughters, Lila and Ellie Priest; sister, Pat (Ken) Clever; numerous nieces and nephews; and close friends, Richard Partin, John Kelner, Phil Holloway, and Dean Iceman.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Pat; sister, Alice (Lowell) Stockdale; brother-in-law, David (Karen) Yingling; and canine companion, Gracie.
Family and friends are invited to visitation on Thursday, July 9, 2026, from 4:00 – 8:00 PM at Wappner Funeral Directors, 98 S. Diamond Street, Mansfield, Ohio. The funeral service will be held on Friday, July 10, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Mt. Zion Lutheran Church, 4065 Mt Zion Rd, Lucas, OH 44843, officiated by Rev. Eric Steward. Burial will follow at Mt. Zion Cemetery.
Jack, along with Pat, had a very generous heart and did many things for the Lucas community. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Jack and Pat Barrett Memorial Scholarship or may be made in person at US Bank.
