James "Jim" Howard Schafer

June 30, 1934 – January 11, 2023
Obituary of James "Jim" Howard Schafer
IN THE CARE OF

Wappner Funeral Directors Mansfield

James “Jim” Howard Schafer, 88, of Mansfield, Ohio passed away on Wednesday, January 11, 2023 at OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital. He was born in Mansfield on June 30, 1934 to the late Karl and Mae (Herring) Schafer.

Jim was a great athlete in high school and was recognized as an All-Ohio basketball player. He was an avid runner and continued his love for running even in his late years. One of his passions was his work at the local YMCA where he served as president and supported the local fundraisers and events for the youth of the community.

Jim met the love of his life, Mary (Quinn) Schafer, in Lakeside, Ohio. They later got married and moved to Germany where Jim was an MP in the U.S. Army. They had their first daughter, Debbie while in Germany and when they arrived back in the United States, they settled back in Mansfield where their daughter, Kimberly was soon born. Upon returning home, Jim began working at the family owned business, Karl Schafer Paper Company, and retired as owner and president. He also owned several retail stores that provided party supplies for events and celebrations.

He is survived by his daughter, Kimberly Schafer-Kuhn; grandchildren, Whitney (Adam) Steinmetz, Allison Ashley, Collin Kuhn and Cameron Kuhn; great-granddaughter, Nina Steinmetz; son-in-law, Michael Ashley; and many other cherished family and friends as well as his dog, Buddy.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Schafer and daughter, Debbie Ashley.

A private graveside service will be held for the family. He will be laid to rest in Mansfield Cemetery. The Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors is honored to serve the family.
