
Jerry Powell, 50, of Mansfield, went home to the Lord Sunday, December 6, 2009 at MedCentral Mansfield Hospital. Born January 14, 1959 in Mansfield, he was the son of Albert and Catherine Staley Powell. Jerry graduated form Mansfield Senior High School in 1978 where he played football and basketball, and was a member of the 1978 State Champions track and field team. He attended Murray State University. Jerry worked at the Mansfield Correctional Institution for 22 years as a corrections officer and was also a counselor and retired in 2009. He was a member of the New Jerusalem Progressive Church of God in Christ where he showed his love for the church by serving as Sunday School teacher, Deacon, Sunday School Superintendant, choir member, member of the Trustee Board, and was called to be a Minister of the Church. A very gentle and dignified man, he always cared for those in need. He enjoyed sports and followed the Cleveland Browns as a very loyal fan, Cleveland Indians, and Ohio State.
He is survived by his loving wife of 19 years, Lucille Simmons Powell, whom he married in 1990; daughter, Jerrica Powell; sons, Jerry Powell, Chris Simmons, Melvin Melton, and Isaac Melton; brothers and sisters-in-law, Alvin and Renatta Powell, and Marcus and Rhonda Powell; sister, Sharon Powell; grandchildren, Kindal, Trenton, Isryahla, Chris Jr., Tristen, Melvin Jr., and one due in April; mother-in-law, Velma Windom; sister-in-law, Jeanette Donald Adkison; brothers-in-law, J.W. Stephanie Windom, Michael Yvonne Windom, Master Sergeant Walter Gina Windom, and Jason Windom; several nieces, nephews, and a host of cousins; aunt, Katie Franklin; and uncle, Jesse Pat Powell. He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Beverly Powell.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 12, 2009 at the New Jerusalem Progressive Church of God in Christ conducted by Superintendant David Dennis. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church. Mansfield Correctional Institution will be conducting an honor service at the church.
Burial will follow in Mansfield Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or Toys for Tots. Wappner Funeral Directors is privileged to serve the family of Jerry Powell.
