John F. Aungst, age 88, of Mansfield, died early Thursday morning at home surrounded by his family following a lingering illness. John was born August 1, 1920 to the late William W. & Frances B. Bookmeyer Aungst in Mansfield, Ohio. He started Plastering in 1936 and later owned and operated John F. Aungst & Son Plastering. John was inducted into the United States Army on September 17, 1942 serving during World War II and was overseas 33 months. He saw combat in Hollandia, New Guinea, was with the first wave on Leyte, and saw combat on Mindoro, Luzon, Romblon, and Mindanoa. John enjoyed hunting, fishing, & motorcycling.
Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Margaret Sabo Aungst; two sons, John M. Aungst of Dayton & William H. Aungst of Mansfield; two daughters & sons-in-law, Martha Jane & Eugene Haliburton, and Margaret & Steve McKown all of Mansfield; two grandchildren, Tina Aungst & Kristy L. McKown; a sister-in-law, Helen Aungst of California; two nephews & their spouses, Rick & Wendy Aungst & John & Aleta Aungst all of California; a niece, Janet Aungst of California; two great-nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson, Bill Haliburton on June 17, 2008; a brother, Harry Aungst on March 18, 2009, & a half-brother, Charles Shenberger.
Friends may call at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors Monday, May 4, 2009 from 5-8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 5, 2009 at 1:00 p.m., conducted by Rev. Dr. Faith Proietti. Military graveside services will be held at Mansfield Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to MedCentral Hospice or the American Heart Association.
