John P. McCarrick, 96, of Mansfield peacefully passed away on September 20, 2025. Born on March 22, 1929, he was the second youngest of 11 siblings to the late James A and Mable M. (Fisher) McCarrick.
John graduated from Mansfield Senior High School in 1948. He was a member of the varsity football team that played the first ever football game in the new Arlin Field stadium.
John retired after 42 years in insurance sales as an independent agent as President of UMK Insurance Agency. He also enjoyed working part time at Hursh Drug after retirement for 17 years.
John was a proud veteran of the United States Army during the Korean War, serving in Okinawa, Japan. He was thrilled to make two trips with fellow veterans to Washington, DC, once with the Honor Flight Columbus and then with the Richland County Honor Bus where he was chosen to place the wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Solider Monument at Arlington Cemetery. John was also a lifetime member of the Amvets and Masons.
One of John’s biggest passions was being a 72-year member of the YMCA. He loved spending time with his many dear friends to exercise, drink coffee and converse. He especially loved playing racquetball with his bestie’s Carolyn, Fern and Shirley. He played racquetball and pickleball until he was 93 years old! He also enjoyed playing tennis and golf and was a 50-year member of the Woodland Club.
John was married to the love of his life Phyllis S. (McFarland) McCarrick for 64 years. They loved to travel, and their favorite spot was Pat’s Place at Lake Erie and to have a perch sandwich. John even rode a Sea Doo on Lake Erie at age 91! John also loved his scratch-off lottery tickets and at the holidays, John’s favorite tradition was to make and deliver Christmas candies and popcorn for family and friends.
John is survived by his children, Cindy (Mark) Bosko of Mansfield, Sue McCarrick of Mansfield, Dave (Kathy) McCarrick of Mansfield; grandchildren, Gregory (Kelsey) Bosko, Andrew (Sarah) Bosko, Emily McCarrick, Ryan (Courtney) Yeager; great-grandchildren, Norah and Baby Boy Bosko, Van and Blu Yeager; numerous nieces and nephews, and many good friends.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis (McFarland) McCarrick; son, Michael McCarrick; brothers, James McCarrick, Jr., William McCarrick, Robert McCarrick, Jack McCarrick; sisters, Mary Shipp, Frances Glasscock, Jean Cushing; and three infant siblings.
John will be dearly missed by family and friends.
Visitors will be welcome on Friday, October 3, 2025, from 10:30 am to 12 Noon at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 98 South Diamond Street, Mansfield, OH 44902. A memorial and graveside service will follow with Joyce Kachenmeister officiating. John will be laid to rest at Mansfield Cemetery.
