John Mathias Shaffer, 83, of Lucas, passed away Thursday, September 1, 2022 in his home. Born January 1, 1939 in Crestline, Ohio, he was the son of Dewey C. and Leota (Conaway) Shaffer.
A veteran of the United States Air Force, John retired from Sprint. He was a member of Faith Baptist Church, Mansfield Moose Lodge #341, VFW #9943 and the Sons of Herman. John played semi-pro football for the Lucas Travelers and the Mohican Raiders. He enjoyed taking motorcycle trips out West.
He is survived by his close loving friend, Bonnie Smith; his sister-in-law, Eleanor Shaffer; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Janice Marie (Foley) Shaffer; a brother, Richard Shaffer and a sister, Juanita (Willis) Lehnhart.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 8, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 98 South Diamond Street conducted by Pastor Dave Davenport. Burial will follow in the Veterans section of Mansfield Cemetery with military honors conducted by Richland County Joint Veterans Service. Friends may call two hours prior to the service, from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m., at the funeral home on Thursday.
