Jon Scott Taylor never met a stranger in his nearly 55 extraordinary years. He greeted every person he met with the same big hello, followed by a story describing a recent experience or interest. While compromised by a brain tumor at age four, Jon lived a life filled with a loving family, numerous good friends, amazing travels and adventures, vast accomplishments, and a generous and unwavering spirit. Jon passed away Tuesday, July 23, 2013 at Kingston of Ashland after a brief illness at the age of 54.
Jon was born in Mansfield, Ohio to Richard and Helen Taylor. A Malabar High School graduate, he was active in the Boy Scouts. Jon worked at Progress Industries for over 30 years, where he took great pride in his job, and rarely missed a scheduled day of work. He was extremely proud to be a member of the capital campaign for Progress Industries.
An avid horseman, Jon was an accomplished rider and participated in the Raemelton Therapeutic Equestrian Program. He was a member of Raemelton's Special Olympic riding team and rode in several shows. Jon was very proud and honored to have been selected to carry the Special Olympic torch in last year's Cincinnati competition.
Jon was a lifelong, active and devoted member of Grace Episcopal Church where he served as an altar boy for many years. He joyfully participated in several church walks for Relay for Life and the annual Crop Walk. Jon also enjoyed riding his three-wheeled bicycle and was a welcomed visitor to neighbors and friends. A lover of theater and music, Jon relished in attending performances at the Mansfield Playhouse.
In addition to his parents, Jon is survived by his five siblings and their spouses: Rick and Carol Taylor of Mansfield; Mary Jo and Jim Hull of Mansfield; Kay and Fred Fathe of Phoenix, AZ; Mark, his twin, and Louise Taylor of Mansfield; Scott and Joann Taylor of Mansfield; numerous nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly; and many, many friends at his home in Wedgewood Estates, Grace Episcopal Church, Raemelton Stables, Progress Industries and within the Mansfield community.
The family will have a private memorial service conducted by Rector Emeritus David S. Sipes. A public Celebration of Life will be held Friday, July 26, 2013 from 5-8 p.m. in the Life Celebration Reception Center, 129 S. Main St., Mansfield. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice. Wappner Funeral Directors is privileged to serve Jon's family.
For all those who knew and loved Jon Taylor, he brightened our world and we are all better people because of him. Godspeed, beloved son, brother, uncle and friend.
