Born September 4, 1927 in Balassagyarmat, Hungary he was the son of Lajos and Terez (Dobrovolni) Kovacs. He received his Masters in Mechanical Engineering at the Technical University of Budapest in 1956 and a Masters in Mining Engineering at The Ohio State University. Louie was an engineer at Ohio Brass where he invented a roof bolt that helped prevent mine roof cave-ins. He retired after 33 years but continued to work as an engineering consultant. During the winter he also worked part time at Snow Trails in maintenance. It was a job he greatly enjoyed especially because of the people he worked with. He was passionate about soccer and coached the Mansfield Liederkranz adult team for several years. Fishing and playing cards were his favorite pastimes but he was happiest and most content when surrounded by his family. He was an exceptional person who never complained about his illness but faced it with courage, who was always polite and kind to his care givers and always kept his sense of humor. His ready laugh, twinkling eyes and positive outlook will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary (Lakatos) Kovacs; two daughters, Klara (Mark) King of Mansfield and Maria (David) Leu of Maryland; eight grandchildren, Amanda, Nathan, Nick, Rebecca, Caitlin, Hannah, Taylor and Courtney; three great grandchildren, Brianna, Jaxson and Gabe; a sister, Klara Lukacs of Budapest, Hungary; a brother, Zoltan Kovacs of Mansfield; and several nieces and nephews in Mansfield and Hungary. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Attila Kovacs and two brothers, Kornel and Istvan Kovacs.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Monday, February 6, 2012 at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 98 S. Diamond Street, Mansfield by St. Peter’s Catholic Church.
