
Leo Clare Hartman, 94, died Thursday at St. Ann's Hospital, Westerville, after a short illness. Living in Mansfield most of his life, Hartman was born March 31, 1905 in Huron County to Joseph and Rachel Hartman. He attended North Fairfield School before working at Shelby Tube and later Westinghouse, retiring in the 1970s. He was also an independent insurance agent with Motorist Mutual Insurance for over 30 years.
Hartman married Anna Marie McManus his wife of 62 years Feb. 3, 1937. She preceded him in death on Good Friday, April 2, 1999.
For over 50 years, Hartman was a member of Roseland Grange and Richland County Pomona Grange, in which he served in a number of offices, as an Ohio delegate and held the seventh degree. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of North Fairfield Grand Lodge of F and A M of Ohio, Mansfield Chapter #28, Mansfield Council #94, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite'Valley of Canton and Mansfield Commandry #28 Knights Templar. He had been a member of the Masons for 70 years.
He is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law Rose Anne and John Henney, Mansfield, Mary Jane and Robert Shuler, Waynesville, Ruth and Joe Henney, Galena, with whom he lived for the past nine months. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren Pamela Henney, Mansfield, Patricia and Jeffrey Peyton, Dexter, Mich., Debra and Chris Stefan, Dayton, Timothy Shuler and Magda Wisniewska, New York, N.Y., James Shuler and Bridget Faun, Waynesville, Christopher Henney and Lisa Reimer, New Philadelphia, Diana Shuler, Waynesville, Brian Shuler, Waynesville, Sarah Henney, Galena, Michael Henney, Galena, Scott Henney, Galena; one great-grandson, Matthew Stefan; and a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents and seven siblings: Samuel Hartman, Scott Hartman, George Hartman, Walter Hartman, Tressie Hartman, Edna Brown, and Clara Cummins Jones.
Calling hours will be held at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, on Sunday, December 19 from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. The evening calling hours will include a Masonic memorial service followed by a Grange memorial service.
Christian services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, December 20, at the funeral home with Rev. David Gilbert and Rev. Allen Rose officiating. Burial will be in Mansfield Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Masonic Home, Springfield, Ohio, Ohio State Grange Camp or Mansfield Memorial Homes.
