February 27, 1939 in Akron, Ohio he was the son of Arthur Green and Ruth (Way) Utter. Loren was a 1957 graduate of Kenmore High School in Akron, a graduate of Salem College in Salem, West Virginia and received his Masters Degree from Xavier University. While playing football at Salem, he was selected to the All-Conference team three years in a row. He was selected as the first team middle linebacker for the first 50 years of the West Virginia conference. Loren was also selected to the All-Conference baseball team. His college batting average was .421. In his junior and senior years, Loren received third team and honorable mention honors for the N.A.I.A. All-American Team. He was a veteran of the United States Army and was co-owner of L & R Painting for over 30 years with his lifelong friend, Ron Whitehill. Loren retired from Pleasant Street Elementary School after 32 years of teaching. He was the assistant coach of the baseball, softball and golf teams before becoming the head golf coach at Ashland High School for 9 years including the 1998 State Championship Division I Golf Team. Following his head coaching position, he continued to be an active member of the Arrow Golf Team as an assistant coach where Loren considered coaching the Arrows as any coach’s dream. He was also a part of the 1974 ISC Softball Champs and the 1981 ASA Softball runner up and participated in the 1982 National Sports Festival. Loren also was involved with the Brookside Junior Golf Program where he volunteered his time for over 20 years. He was a member of the Ashland County Sports Hall of Fame, the Ohio Amateur Softball Hall of Fame, the Salem Athletic Hall of Fame and was a huge Alabama Crimson Tide football fan. He will deeply miss having breakfast with the guys which became a morning ritual of Loren’s since his retirement in 1998. Loren touched many lives thru his teaching, coaching and volunteering but his family was always important to him and he loved his family and three sons more than anything.
Loren is survived by his wife, Kay (Earley) Green whom he married November 28, 1975; his three sons, Todd (Susan) Green of Birmingham, AL, Scott (Kathy) Green of Ashland, OH and Tyler ( Taunia) Green of Pulaski, TN; his grandchildren, Ethan, Paige, Lauren, Kayla, Courtney and Taylor; his mother-in-law, Helen Earley; a brother-in-law, Dave Earley; and numerous special aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; his father-in-law, Bud Earley; and numerous aunts and uncles.
Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. Friday, April 20, 2012 at the Ashland Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 308 Claremont Avenue, Ashland. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 21, 2012 at Emmanuel United Methodist Church, 322 Cleveland Avenue, Ashland conducted by Rev. Pat Reiter. Private burial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Loren Green Memorial Golf Scholarship Fund and may be left at the funeral home.
