
Mary Aletha Kunkle, 85, of Shelby, died Saturday April 23, 2005 at Forest Hills Center, Columbus after an extended illness. Born December 11, 1919 in Crestline, she was the daughter of William Harrison and Velma Sabin Muntis. She was Salutatorian, class of 1937, at Leesville High School and a 1944 graduate of Mansfield General Hospital School of Nursing. Mrs. Kunkle was a Registered Nurse at MedCentral Mansfield Hospital, where during her career, she was the Head Nurse on the Post Operative Floor. In 1971, Mrs. Kunkle moved with her husband to Naples, Florida where she continued her nursing career and obtained a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Florida International University in 1976. She retired from Cape Coral Hospital in Florida, but continued working part-time as a Home Health Care Nurse in Florida until age 74, when she returned to the Mansfield area. She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, sang in the choir, taught Sunday school, and could always be counted on to help friends and neighbors. She enjoyed boating, fishing, swimming, bowling, and gardening.She is survived by two daughters and son-in-law, Jan Kunkle of New Albany, and Marty and Mike Diamond of Highland Village, Texas; one son and daughter-in-law, David and Jody Kunkle of Mansfield; five grandchildren, Brian and Megan Kunkle, and Jessica, Jenny, and Jill Diamond; two sisters and brother-in-law, Ruth Muntis of Lakeside, and Charlotte and John Smith of Heath; one brother and sister-in-law, William and Margaret Muntis of Crestline; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death on August 20, 1982 by her husband, John M. Kunkle, whom she married February 28, 1945; her parents; and one sister, Leah Kipp.Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday April 27, 2005 at the First Presbyterian Church, Mansfield, with Rev. Dr. David Hartzfeld officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to the service, from 12 to 1 p.m., Wednesday at the church. Burial will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park.
