Michael Gilbert Diemer, born March 6, 1944, was called home to his Savior on Wednesday, May 16, 2018. Mike was born in Toledo, Ohio and adopted from the Toledo Catholic Charities at the age of three by the late Gilbert Peter and Ethel Faye (Fry) Diemer of Mansfield, Ohio. Mike was a 1962 graduate of Madison Local Schools. He earned a bachelor's degree in Industrial Education from Bowling Green State University, and a master's degree in Computer Education from Ashland University.
Mike agreed to a half year position as an Industrial Arts teacher at Hillsdale High School. The following school year he began his career at Madison Local Schools where he taught for the next 34 years. He taught Industrial Arts at the junior high schools for 28 years and the last six years he taught computer education at the high school. He was also an adjunct instructor at Ashland University for several years. Mike served as the president of the Madison Local Education Association for 14 years. He involved fellow staff members in building floats for the Halloween parades. He was active in summer tag programs for model rocketry as well as judging 4-H projects for the County Extension Services.
Mike was an active member of Grace Episcopal Church serving on the vestry numerous times. Grace Episcopal Church food pantry was very important to Mike. He worked as a pantry volunteer every week for years and was instrumental in getting the pantry computerized. He arranged various activities for the youth groups including setting up and operating a haunted house, trips to Mohican, and two trips to Williamsburg, Washington DC, Arlington National Cemetery, and the National Cathedral.
Mike enjoyed building his seven sand rail dune buggies and taking them to the Silver Lake Sand Dunes in Michigan. Mike was a huge Disney enthusiast and enjoyed many trips to Walt Disney World and one to Disney Land. His especially cherished sharing Disney World with Betty, their children and later their spouses and the grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife Betty (Smith Kaufman) Diemer whom he married February 1, 1964; son, Michael Gene (Monica) Diemer; daughter, Lisa Marie (Robert Kirstein) Diemer; grandsons, Zachariah and Gabriel Diemer; step grandsons, Caleb and Paris Stewart; an adopted brother, Larry Canfield; and several nephews and a niece.
Calling hours will be held on Monday, May 21, 2018 at Grace Episcopal Church, 41 Bowman Street, Mansfield, Ohio from 5:00-7:00 pm. An additional hour of calling will be held from 10:00-11:00 am prior to the service on Tuesday. A memorial service will be held at the church on Tuesday, May 22, 2018 at 11:00 am, Rev. Joe L. Ashby and Rector Emeritus David S. Sipes will officiate. Burial will be in Lexington Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Grace Episcopal Food Pantry or Grace Episcopal Church.
