

Michael “Mike” Volk, 89, of Mansfield, passed away Sunday, October 23, 2011 at home after an extended heart ailment. Born August 3, 1922 in Tovarischevo, Yugoslavia, he was the son of John and Eva Volk. He was the owner and President of Mike Volk Company and was dedicated to his work and the community, always there taking care of what needed to be done. Mike and Helen established the Volk Family Foundation and they and the Mike Volk Company have contributed to many community causes such as Habitat for Humanity, St. Peter’s School, Malabar Farm and many others. Mike was known in the industry as a fair and honest businessman who always went the extra mile to do the job right. His word was as good as gold. Having come to this country with his wife and oldest son, they started life in Mansfield with nothing. He started out as a sheet metal apprentice and self educated himself and rose in the industry prior to starting the Mike Volk Company with the assistance of wife, Helen and son, Dieter. He provided generation of Mansfield residents good paying jobs in the worst recession since the great depression. He was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church and his greatest joy was being around his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Helen (Glaesser) Volk; two sons, Dieter Volk and daughter-in-law, Ute Volk of Mansfield and Roland Volk and daughter-in-law, Katharine Volk of Baton Rouge, Louisiana and daughter-in-law, Sarah Volk of Mansfield; grandchildren, David, Eric, John, Kurt, and Michael; eight great grandchildren; and a sister, Marie Loschinkohl of Mansfield. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Harold Volk, and grandson, Alex Volk
Friends may call Saturday, October 29, 2011 from 9:00 a.m. till 12:00 p.m. at the Diamond St. Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 98 S. Diamond St., Mansfield. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday October 29, 2011 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Salvation Army.
