Nancy Patricia (Callaway) (MacKinnon) Lombardi, age 90, passed away in her sleep on Sunday, June 20, 2021 at the Liberty Nursing Center of Mansfield in Mansfield, Ohio. She was born on July 7, 1930, the daughter of Walter Leslie Callaway and Louise Ellen Callaway.
Nancy was a graduate of Braintree High School in Massachusetts. She returned to school later in life after raising her five children and earned her Licensed Practical Nursing degree. She was a geriatric nurse for over 30 years in both Massachusetts and South Carolina. Nancy loved her work and cared for countless patients and their families over the course of her career.
Family and home were most important to Nancy. She grew up on the South Shore of Massachusetts and spent summers and vacations with her grandparents in North Marshfield, where they owned the Humarock Inn. Besides raising her children, Nancy was an avid animal lover and had many furry companions over the years that she doted on. After moving to South Carolina in 1979, she enjoyed traveling back to Braintree to visit her parents at her childhood home, her sisters and their families, and her children and grandchildren at their homes throughout the country. She went on several family adventures with her children and grandchildren all over California and to Canada. She loved seeing new places, trying new foods and just being in the company of family. Nancy was happiest when she was on the move; shopping and eating out, but also loved her afternoon tea with a good book at home. Nancy was a loyal and generous friend and had many long-term friendships near and far. She especially liked to keep in touch through writing letters. For years, she and her sisters wrote to each other on a daily basis about the events of their lives; large and small. She was a wonderful grandmother and always came prepared to have fun. Inheriting her father’s love of nature, Nancy passed on her knowledge of plants and flowers to her children and grandchildren, teaching them the names of birds and plant life. She loved to garden and walk with her dogs in the woods near her home well into her eighties.
Nancy is survived by her sister, Doris Mathieson of East Bridgewater, Massachusetts, her five children; Phillip John MacKinnon of South Dakota, Walter William MacKinnon and wife Kathleen of Hanson, Massachusetts, Patricia Louise MacKinnon and husband Tom Franco of San Clemente, California, Jon Arthur MacKinnon of Lexington, South Carolina, Margaret (Peg) Mary (MacKinnon) Rundag and husband Christopher of Shelby Ohio and step-son David Lombardi of Brockton, Massachusetts. She also leaves behind fifteen grandchildren; Laurie, Phillip, Walter, Kristen, Sean, Ross, Justin, James, Grayson, Karen, Jon, Heather, Ryan, Jesse and Jordan, and several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her first husband Phillip John MacKinnon, and her husband Cosmo Dominic Lombardi, her younger brother and two older sisters; Walter Callaway of Florida, June Mitchell of Dalton Gardens, Idaho and Beatrice Secor of Portland, Oregon, brother-in-law John (Jack) Mathieson of Hanson, Massachusetts and son-in-law, Glenn Edward Phillips of Shelby, Ohio.
Nancy requested to be cremated. Her family will celebrate her life privately. The family wishes to thank all of those who cared for her at Liberty Nursing Center through their dedicated service during her last days. We are so grateful for the excellent care she received at their residential dementia care unit, especially in light of the challenges presented by the pandemic. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the ASPCA in Nancy’s name. She would love to know that she was still helping those in need from Heaven.
Arrangements were provided by Wappner Cremation Center.
