

Norman E. "Gene" Young, 78, of Mansfield, OH died October 17, 2013. Born on January 8, 1935, he was the son of Ernest J. and Catherine (Wynn) Young. Gene was a loyal, honest gentleman who loved spending time with his grandchildren and fixing bicycles. He enjoyed spending time at the Ashland road McDonald's with his buddies and volunteering for the Salvation Army and Domestic Violence Shelter. Gene served our country proudly for over 12 years as a Sergeant in the Army. He served during Vietnam, was a P.O.W in Korea, and served in the Dominican Republic. Gene was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church.
Surviving are his fiance, Peggy Taylor; two sons, Norman E. Young Jr. of Mansfield and James E. Young (Misty) of Shelby; two grandsons, Devin Williams and Liam Young; sister, Donna Rock of Mansfield; two nephews, Jeff Rock and Allen Craig; niece, Margene Young; and family of Peggy Taylor.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Charles E. Young.
Family and friends are invited to call Wednesday, October 23, 2013 from 5-8pm at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 98 S. Diamond St., Mansfield, OH. Funeral services, conducted by Father Jeremy Miller, will be held Thursday, October 24 at 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home with additional visitation beginning at 8:30 a.m. Military services will be presented by the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Squad after the funeral service.
