

Oscar L. Whitaker, 82, of Mansfield, died March 19, 2015. He was born December 22, 1932 in Lake City, TN, and was the son of Fletcher and Stella (Garner) Whitaker and one of ten children. Oscar served as a member of the Army in Korea in 1953 and 1954. After returning home, he went to work for Westinghouse until 1956, when he began working at Al-Ray's Shell Station. In 1963, Oscar purchased the station and operated the business until 1971. Following the sale of the Shell station, he worked for and retired from the City of Mansfield, where he was the Garage Repair Foreman. He was a proud member of the American Legion and the Republican Party. Oscar was a former member of the Central United Methodist Church, where he was baptized, married and had led the youth group for a number of years.
Surviving are his wife of over 50 years, Sandra E. (Stricker) Whitaker of Mansfield; sons, Brian Whitaker and Bryce Whitaker; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Oscar was preceded in death by his parents and several siblings.
Graveside services will be held Tuesday, March 24, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at Mansfield Cemetery, conducted by Rev. Chris Mason. Family and friends are invited to visit beginning at 1:00 p.m.at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 98 S. Diamond Street, Mansfield. Memorial contributions may be made to the family.
