

Mr. Richard S. “Bones” Bonesteel, 87, went home to see his Lord on November 7, 2017, in Ashland, Ohio, surrounded by his loving family. Richard was born in Schenectady, New York, on May 20, 1930, to Chester S. and Naomi C. (nee Campbell) Bonesteel.
His family moved to Erie, Pennsylvania, when Richard was a small child. As a young man, Richard helped his grandparents manage a campground at Paradox Lake, New York. Richard attended Denison University in Granville, Ohio, where he met his future wife, Ann. He graduated in 1952. After graduation, Richard joined the Army and served for two years as a Sergeant in the Infantry in the Korean War. Following his time in the military, he married Ann, and continued his education at the University of Pittsburgh where he received a master’s degree in Education. The couple later moved to Upper Arlington, Ohio, where they raised their family. Richard went on to work as a French and Spanish teacher, and later worked for F. E. Myers Pumps in Ashland, Ohio, then Buckeye Pumps in Galion, Ohio, until he retired in 1995. His wife Ann passed away in 2005. He later met and married his beautiful and loving wife, Carolyn, and had the happiest of years with her. They have enjoyed playing cards, traveling, antique shopping, watching movies, and just being together.
Richard loved his family and friends, and also loved traveling. He spent many happy times with family at their vacation home on Lake Bonaparte in upstate New York. He also loved growing and canning raspberries for friends, and playing bridge and euchre whenever possible. He loved sports, especially lacrosse-which he played in college, tennis, Indians baseball, and the OSU Buckeyes. He was very active as an Elder in the First Presbyterian Church in Ashland. Richard was on the Board of Alumni at Kappa Sigma fraternity. He was known as the person who would help anyone.
Richard is survived by his loving wife, Carolyn Yoss-Bonesteel (nee Yost); his son, Richard (Andrea) Bonesteel of Fairlawn, Ohio; daughter, Diana Bonesteel of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and step-children, Jane (Ray) Hobson of Jeromesville, Ohio, Kate (Brad) Long of Ashland, Ohio, and Charles (Ann) Yoss of Kettering, Ohio. He is also survived by his granddaughters, Jessica, Elizabeth, Katherine, and Alexandra. He is preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Ann (nee Hazlett); and his son, Stephen.
A Celebration of Life Ceremony will be held on Monday, November 13, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 320 Church St., Ashland, OH 44805. A gathering for family and friends will be held following the ceremony. A private interment ceremony will take place in Findlay, Ohio.
The family has requested that donations be made to Pathways Hospice, 619 Claremont Ave., Ashland, Ohio 44805.
