
Robert D. Coon, 83, of Mansfield, died Wednesday evening, October 5, 2005 at MedCentral Mansfield Hospital. Born September 10, 1922 in Athens, Ohio he was the son of Earl and Estie Smith Coon. He served in the U.S. Army in the 11th Armored Division and, during WWII, in the Battle of the Bulge and Bastogne. Mr. Coon was a member of the First English Lutheran Church, the Liederkranz, and Past Commander of the VFW Post #7651. He loved to read and help his children, and was very active in many civic activities.
He is survived by his wife, Katherine Anton Coon; son and daughter-in-law, Jerrold and Barbara Coon of Mansfield; four grandchildren, Diana Fleeman of Virginia, Steven Maxwell of Greer, South Carolina, Julianne Coon of Mansfield, and Caitlin Little of Virginia; one great grandchild, Hunter Fleeman; two sisters, Elaine Sawhill of Newark, and Betty Farnsworth of Mansfield; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Linda K. Little; and six brothers and sisters, Herbert Coon, Mae Jurgelwitz, Ruby Rudrick, 'Teddy' Truex, Cameron Coon, and Louise Hollman.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, October 8, 2005 at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors conducted by Rev. Cloyd E. Kress. Friends may call one hour prior to the funeral at the funeral home. Military graveside services will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park conducted by the Joint Veterans Burial Squad. Memorial contributions may be made to the First English Lutheran Church.
