
Robert D. Roland, 79, of Ashland, died Saturday morning, December 10, 2005 at Grant Medical Center after a brief illness. Born February 4, 1926, he was the son of Ivan H. and Henrietta Mann Roland. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. Mr. Roland retired in 1986 from Ashland University after 23 years of service, serving as the Registrar and Dean of Students. He was a member of the Christ United Methodist Church, where he was a former trustee and Sunday school superintendent. Mr. Roland was a member of the F & AM Ashland #151 and a 32nd Degree Mason Scottish Rite. He was also a member of the American Legion, the City Club, the Ashland University Faculty Club, and served as a City Councilman for the city of Ashland.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Hulit Roland of Ashland; two daughters and sons-in-law, Anne and William Dorn of Ashland, and Nancy and Felix McElroy of Midland, Michigan; five grandsons and their spouses, Robert Dorn and Jenny Meanwell of Westford, Massachusetts, Scott and Carolyn Dorn of Findlay, Brian Dorn of St. Petersburg, Florida, Felix 'Ted' McElroy of Wilmington, Delaware, and Michael McElroy of Midland, Michigan; one granddaughter and her spouse, Lia and Dexter Stallworth of Indianapolis, Indiana; four great-grandchildren, Angel, Chloe, Disney, and Drake; one sister, Dorothy McCullough of Lexington; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 14, 2005 at the Christ United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. James Cox and Rev. Tom McFarren. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial in Ashland Cemetery will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Roland Scholarship at Ashland University. The Ashland Home of Wappner Funeral Directors assisted the family with arrangements.
