Robert Selby

Robert G. ''Bob'' Selby, age 86, of 773 Cranberry Court died Saturday, December 9, 2000 at MedCentral Mansfield after an extended illness. He was born May 3, 1914 in Mansfield to John & Gertrude Hannan Selby, living here all of his life. He retired from Westinghouse Corporation after 40 years of service. Mr. Selby was a member of First Christian Church, Retman's Club, A.A.R.P., Boy Scout Leader, Merit Badge Leader and a member of the American Federation of Musicians #159 and a 1932 Graduate of Madison high School. In 1928 Bob had a hobby of playing his trumpet. He joined the Eugene Smart Boy Scout Orchestra, in 1930 the band was appointed to attend the Boy Scout World Jamboree, to play in New York City's Hotel the Pennsylvania Ballroom for the festivities. During the trip the Scouts toured Gettysburg and Valley Forge. Later on in the 1930's he played around Mansfield in small combo's for weekends, etc. Over the years to come Bob played in many of them. In the roaring 1940's and later, he was a member of the Westinghouse AFL-CIO Marching Band and the Bob Richard Westinghouse Dance Band. After WWII era they disbanded. From there on and to his retirement, Bob's horn tooted in his favorite orchestras, The Bill Leicy Band, The Harmonairs and the Dell King Band.

He is survived by his wife Helen E. Beard Selby; his daughter, Linda L. Wetzel; and his son, Ronald G. Selby all of Mansfield; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Dorothy E. Davis of Mansfield and Norma J. Knepper of Cleveland, Ohio and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, John W. & Gertrude A. Selby; two brothers, Harold L. Selby and J. Raymond Selby; and a sister, Evelyn E. Hardy.

Friends may call at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors on Wednesday, December 13, 2000 one hour prior to the service. Services will be held at the funeral home at 1:00, conducted by Rev. J. Terry Marsh. Burial will be held at Mansfield Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Christian Church.
