

Ronald Elkins, 84, of Sylva, North Carolina, passed away Sunday evening, September 3, 2017, at Grandview Manor in North Carolina. He was a longtime resident of the Mansfield, Ohio area before moving to North Carolina. Born October 28, 1932, in Borderland, Kentucky, he was the son of the late William McKinley Elkins and Stella Katherine Adkins Elkins.
Ronald was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Coming from a family of seven children, he knew the value of hard work. He retired from AK Steel where he worked as a crane operator. Ronald was a member of United Steelworkers of America and a variety of carving clubs in both Mansfield and North Carolina. In his free time, he enjoyed woodworking and wood carving.
He is survived by his wife, Berta Mae Nolen Elkins; two sons, Ronald Dean Elkins of Murfreesboro, TN, and Kenneth Joe Elkins of Franklin, NC; two daughters, Robin (Clyde) Clevenger of Galion, OH, and Katherine (Thad) Cetinich of Mansfield; seven grandchildren, Crystal (Jeff) Adams, Amber Skaggs, Shannon (Crystal Evans) Skaggs, Ashley Skaggs, Tiffany Elkins, Cody Reeder and Breanna Bulten; eight great-grandchildren, Morgan, Mason, Ashtin, Addyson, Jayce, Jayven, Hunter and Kyler; and two nephews, Jackie Elkins and Charles Elkins.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by two sisters, Fanny Sturgill and Vivian Workman; and four brothers, Ernest, Bill, Charlie and Dennis Elkins.
The family will receive friends from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 12, 2017, at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 100 S. Lexington-Springmill Road. The funeral service conducted by Rev. Herman Copley will be held in the funeral home on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. He will be laid to rest in Mansfield Memorial Park with military honors presented by the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
