Shirley Friend

Shirley Friend, 76, of Mansfield, died August 16, 2011 at Hospice of North Central Ohio. Born January 1, 1935 in Kitzmiller, Maryland, she was the daughter of Robert and Dora (Powell) Burton. Shirley was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and worked part time at Sears and Therm-O Disc, where she enjoyed the people she worked with. She enjoyed being on the water, especially fishing with her husband in the early years. Shirley’s favorite pastimes include word search puzzles, watching TV, and was an avid walker. Most of all, Shirley loved spending time at home with family.

She is survived by her daughters, Christy (Bruce) McMillan, Pam (Kevin) Owens, and Dora (Richard) Byus, all of Mansfield; grandchildren, Andrew (Sherry) McMillan, Katie (Tim) Cox, Rocky (Tiffany) Owens, and Mandy (Ryan) German; great grandchildren, Mason McMillan and Mercadies Owens, Blake Gregory, and Amelia McMillan; sister, Betty (Bob) Connell of Bellville; brother, Joe (Nancy) Burton of Mansfield; sisters-in-law, Peggy Carroll of Mansfield and Barbara Wood of Ironton; and numerous nieces and nephews. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, John C. Friend; four brothers, Marion, Robert, William, and Jack Burton; and a sister, Helen Swineford.

Friends may call Thursday, August 18, 2011 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the Diamond St. Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 98 S. Diamond St., Mansfield. Funeral services will be held Friday, August 19, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home, conducted by Rev. Robert Stull. Burial will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park.
