

Stephen P. Barbely, 75, of West Cook Rd. died Monday morning, January 28, 2002 at the SCCI facilities after a two-year battle with cancer. Now alive with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Steve was born October 12, 1926 in Ellisville, Mississippi to Beatrice Gal and Joseph Barbely. Steve lived in Mansfield most of his life. He attended Woodville Grace Brethren church. He retired from Hursh Drugstore and worked part-time at Newhope Industries, and also as a volunteer for Bridge-the-Gap. Steve was an avid golfer and worked many years at the Woods Golf Course. Steve served during WWII with the US Navy. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother. Steve gave much of his resources, both time and money, to area organizations to benefit the community. He will be remembered as a kind-hearted and giving gentleman. He lived his life telling people, 'To be kind to each other, to be good to each other and to help each other.'
He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Chris and Debbie Barbely and Mike and Denise Barbely, all of Mansfield; two daughters and one son-in-law, Vicki Barbely and Catherine and Denny Pfahler, all of Mansfield; stepchildren and their spouses, Richard and Cynthia Nichols, Oscar and Anita Nichols, and Norman and Lori Nichols all of Mansfield, and Samuel and Patricia Nichols of Colleyville, Texas; six grandchildren, Bethany & Matt Wallace, Stephen Howard, Deena Marie, Michael Jr. Summer Joy, and Christopher Charles; one great-grandson, Trae Adam, and a beloved brother, Charles J. Barbely of Mansfield; eight step-grandchildren; one step-great-grandson and four step-great-granddaughters. He was preceded in death by his wife of nearly fifty years, Shirley Niemann Barbely; two sisters and one brother; and his second wife, Nina Nichols Barbely.
Friends may call at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, Wednesday, January 30 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. and one hour prior to the funeral service. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home Thursday, January 31 at 10:30 a.m., conducted by Rev. Steve Kern and Rev. Robert Doerr. Burial will follow in Mansfield Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made at the funeral home to the Bridge-the-Gap of Mansfield, Ohio.
