
Sylvester Jackson, 88, of Mansfield, died Thursday, October 6, 2005, at MedCentral Mansfield Hospital. Born January 3, 1917 in Eckmon, West Virginia, he was the son of Rev. Jesse Jackson and Mossie Hairston-Jackson. He was a resident of Mansfield since 1958 and retired from General Motors. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during WWII and received the American Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Ribbon, Victory Medal, and Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with one Bronze Star.
He is survived by a daughter, Sylverene Jackson of Yonkers, New York; a son, Claude Jackson of Mansfield; two sisters, Bryte Bowen of Mansfield and Romona Todd of Delaware, Ohio; a brother, Truman Jackson of Mansfield; seven grandchildren, Afreda Jackson, April Jackson, Mona Lisa Jackson, Mary Jackson, and Monica Armstrong, all of Yonkers, Gladys Couch of Mt. Vernon, New York, and Claude Jackson, Jr. of Mansfield; fourteen great-grandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, beloved wife, Gladys Jackson, sisters, Sylverene Jackson, Beulah Dudley, Lovonia Todd, and Samentha Jackson, and brothers, Shedrick Jackson, Allen Jackson and Andrew Jackson.
Funeral services will be held Monday, October 10, 2005, at 10:00 a.m. at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, conducted by Pastor Walter E. Jordan II. Friends may call at the funeral home from 9-10 a.m. Military graveside services conducted by Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail will follow in Mansfield Cemetery.
