
VaLois Carlson, 74, of 884 Red Oak Trail, Mansfield, died May 4, 2004 at her home. She went home to be with her Lord after a 16-month battle with cancer. Mrs. Carlson was born on April 5, 1930 in Joice, Iowa, to John and Olga Field. After graduation from Joice High School she became an RN and received a bachelor's degree in Public Health in a 5-year nursing program at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, Fairview Hospital in Minneapolis, Minnesota and the University of Minnesota. In 1966, she and her family moved to Ontario where she taught in the Practical Nurse program at Mansfield High School for North Central Technical College, taught in the Health Aide program at Pioneer Joint Vocational program at Shelby, Ohio and retired from Mansfield City Schools after 13 years as a school nurse assigned to St. Peter's Schools. She had been an active volunteer in many organizations including Ontario United Methodist Church, Ontario Schools, AFS, RSVP, the Renaissance Theatre, Malabar Farm and Ranchwood Schools among others. She and her husband spent the last 12 years wintering at Silveridge RV Park in Mesa, Arizona.
Surviving are her husband, Herald Carlson, with whom she celebrated 50 years of marriage in August 2003; three daughters and sons-in-law, Val and Doug Corley of Lafayette, Indiana, Sue and Rod Stover of Upland, Indiana, Jan and Vern Ellis of Westerville, Ohio; six grandchildren, Brian and Amy Corley, Matthew and Jacob Stover, Kristen and Rachel Ellis; a sister-in-law, Maxine Field and her husband, William Bartlett of Mesa, Arizona; two brothers-in-law and their wives, Lester and Margaret Carlson of Topeka, Kansas, Arnold and Jean Carlson of Wells, Minnesota; a special cousin and his wife, Larry and Ingrid Slattum of Eagan, Minnesota; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, Friday, May 7 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at Ontario United Methodist Church at 3540 Park Avenue West at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 8. Interment will follow at Mansfield Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Ontario United Methodist Church or Hospice of North Central Ohio, 1605 County Rd. 1095, Ashland, Ohio 44805.
