
Velma J. Mathews, 84, of Mansfield, died Monday, February 26, 2007, at Crystal Care Center. Born July 30, 1922, in Vildo Stanton, Tennessee, the daughter of Leverone and Rose Lee Carr Jones. A Mansfield area homemaker since 1939, she was a member of Providence Baptist Church. Velma was a caring mother and grandmother and will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by seven sons, Robert Joyce Mathews of CA, Curtis Connie Mathews of Petersburg, VA, Kenneth Mathews of Lima, Thomas Lee Katsie Mathews Sr., Tyrone Diane Mathews Sr., Larry James Mary Ann Mathews and Anthony Mathews, all of Mansfield; four daughters, Rosie Mae Powell of CA, LaVonda Kaye Richard Isby of Maumee, Elizabeth Mack and Nadine Frank Miller, all of Mansfield; thirty-five grandchildren; forty-two great-grandchildren; nine great-great grandchildren; father of her children, Oscar Mathews; a brother, R.V. Rosie Lee Jones of St. Louis, MO; five sisters, Nettie Lee Turner of Stanton, TN, Novella Southall of Brownville, TN, Edna Mae Perry of Buffalo, NY, Anna Lou Ellison of Oakland, CA, and Martha Nell Washington of Gary, IN; sister-in-law, Jannie Jones of Jackson, TN; and a host of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, Audie Mathews; parents; three brothers, Barney Jones, Jessie Louis Jones and Percy Jones; and two sisters, Judy Belle Jones and Ever Holloway.
Friends may call Monday, March 5 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at Providence Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Mansfield Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Crystal Care Nursing Home, 1159 Wyandotte Ave., Mansfield, Ohio 44906. The family will receive friends at the home of Frank and Nadine Miller.
