
Viola Field Miller, 84, died Wednesday, August 8, 2001, at Mifflin Care Center after a long illness. She was born May 2, 1917, in Reedsville, W. Va. to Ben and Lora Bollinger Field. She retired in 1980 as head cook at Madison Comprehensive High School. During World War II, she worked for the Packard Motor Company in Detroit, Mich., while her husband, Arthur Frank Miller, served in General George Patton's Third Army. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church's Epworth Guild, Sarah Circle, T.Y.T.Q. Group, and Sunshine Chairwoman of the church for 12 years. Mrs. Miller enjoyed crafts, especially hand-painted sweatshirts and personalized stationery, and also baking pies and angel food cakes for shut-ins. An expert seamstress, she made quilts and hand-made dolls for all of her grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, whom she married August 24, 1941, in Kingwood, W.Va., she is survived by two children, Larry F. Miller of Mansfield, and Cathy L. Buscher of Ashland; four grandchildren, Libby Miller Nickoli and Drew Miller, both of Mansfield, Julie Buscher of Ashland, and Laura Buscher Schilling of Livonia, Mich.; and one great-grandson, A.J. Nickoli. Mrs. Miller is also survived by two sisters, Velma Ball of Eatonton, Ga., and Burl Duncan of Romeo, Mich., and two brothers, Harold Field of Orlando, Fla., and George Field of Reedsville, W. Va. and numerous nieces and nephews. A sister, Dorothy Starkey of Bremerton, Wash., preceded her in death.
Friends may call at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors Friday, August 10 from 5-8 p.m. and one hour prior to services being held Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Rev. Mark Oster of Ashland will conduct services. Burial will follow in Mansfield Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church.
