Born October 29, 1926, in Shelby, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Rittie (Stacy) and Joseph Payton. She graduated from God’s Bible School and College in 1945. During the Vietnam War, she worked for the Navy where her first husband was stationed. She was a member of a strong Navy family with both of her husbands serving their country. Wanda retired from BP (formerly SOHIO) in Cleveland, Ohio. She tried and succeeded at being a wonderful stepmother.
Wanda is survived by three stepchildren, Joyce (Rosson) Shasteen, John (Lori) Porter and David (Pam) Porter; a brother, Rev. Joe Payton; a special niece, Carol Tackett who cared for her, was there for Wanda for months and was only 10 minutes away when needed; and nieces and nephews, Walter Jones, Steve Payton, Rhonda and Jodi.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Lee Shasteen; second husband and soulmate, Ray Porter; stepdaughter, Margie Binion; sister, Opal Jones; and nieces and nephews, David Jones, Barb Patton, Gary Jones, Connie Cline, Joey Payton and Betty Hess.
A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, July 9, 2024, in Springmill Cemetery, State Route 39, at 1:00 p.m. Wappner Funeral Directors-Mansfield is honored to serve the family.
Wanda left a touching message to everyone: “Goodbye everyone! I’ve gone to Heaven!! Not many “kin” and friends left. They have beaten me to the Pearly Gates! Hope to see ALL of you one day!!”
