William H. Kohler, 75, of Mansfield, passed away Sunday evening, December 20, 2020, at OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital. He was born November 6, 1945, in Louisville, Kentucky, and moved to Ohio at an early age.
Bill grew up in the Tiffin, Ohio, area and joined the U.S. Air Force. Serving in many countries over the years, he retired after 39 years of service. He was the Command Chief Master Sergeant at the 179th Airlift Wing and was revered by many as a honorable commander and man of the utmost integrity. He was a true leader in every sense of the word. Bill was never one to let the grass grow under his feet and, after his retirement, he began a 15 year career at Wappner Funeral Directors where he was a valued member of our team.
Bill's life was epitomized in his service to others. Beginning in the military and continuing to his church and community, he gave of his time and many talents to several Richland County organizations over his lifetime. He was a faithful member of Ontario Christian Fellowship and served on various committees within the church. Bill's work ethic and moral compass inspired and guided so many people. It is a legacy that will be treasured by all who were lucky enough to have been a part of his life. We love you Kohler!
He is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara Bogner Kohler; two cherished daughters, Sara (Ryan) Watson of Columbus, Ohio and Sophie (Chad) Kohler of Arlington, Virginia; two precious grandchildren, Cornelia and William Watson; brother, John (Ann) Kohler of Watkinsville, GA; sister, Becky (Earl) Bryant of GA; numerous loving in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews; and many dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Paul and Anita Kohler.
Although he was taken from us far too soon, Bill will remain in our hearts forever. The family wishes to thank all the heroes at OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital for caring and loving our husband, father and grandfather during his week of valiantly fighting this horrific Covid-19 virus. They were there for him when we could not be at his bedside and we are forever thankful for the superior care he received from each of them. Thanks to our Wappner family for loving and caring for Bill and welcoming all of us into their family.
A memorial service with military honors will be held at a future date.
