Daniel Lyon Nutter was born on January 16, 1932 to Fayette Alonzo and Lutie Enolia Nutter in Alcester, South Dakota. He moved with his parents to Denison, Texas just before his senior year of high school and graduated from Denison High School in 1951. He earned a degree in History from Southeastern Oklahoma State University in 1956. Following graduation, he taught history until he had the opportunity to fill in when the district librarian position opened up mid-year. He immediately realized his passion was books and this led to a distinguished career as an academic librarian. He eventually completed two Master’s degrees in Library Science from the University of North Texas. He served as a librarian at Clarendon College (TX), Southwestern College (KS), Southwestern Oklahoma State University (OK) and retired from the University of Texas at Brownsville. Over the course of his career, he had the opportunity to touch many lives.
He met Elizabeth Jane Mohnkern in Clarendon, Texas and they were united in marriage on December 21, 1963. They were married nearly 46 years before her death. Together, they raised two children, Margaret and Charles. Following his beloved Elizabeth’s death, he completed coursework to become certified as a Master Gardener and a Master Naturalist. Daniel was also a member of the Burnet County Fair Board and the Birds and Wildflowers Society. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Marble Falls.
Daniel was preceded in death by his parents, his brother “Bub” and his wife Elizabeth. He is survived by son Charles Nutter of Marble Falls, daughter Margaret and her husband Jim Wofford of Liberty Hill, granddaughter Leslie Wofford and his big sister Rebecca Aschinger of Omaha, Nebraska, plus numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorials have been established in his name with First United Methodist Church of Marble Falls, Highland Lakes Master Gardeners and Southwestern College in Kansas.
