David Dean Prather II was born on December 18th, 1945 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He left his earthly home and went to his heavenly home on December 2nd, 2021. After his birth, David and his parents moved to Freer, Texas where they resided until David graduated from Freer High School in 1964. David attended and graduated from Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry. While attending college, he was a member of the marching band and during his freshman year, he and the band marched in the presidential inauguration parade of Lyndon B. Johnson. He was also a member of the Alpha Phi Omega fraternity and rodeo club at Southwest Texas University.
David married his wonderful wife, Sue, on November 29th, 1968. He began his career with Houston Natural Gas in 1974 and was eventually promoted to plant superintendent. He was loved and respected by all of his coworkers. David also served Edwards County as an Emergency Medical Technician and was the first paramedic in the county. He was ordained as a deacon in the Rocksprings Baptist Church in Rocksprings, Texas in 1979 and served several other churches as a deacon over the years: Tilden Baptist Church in Tilden, Texas, First Baptist Church in Sonora, Texas, New Hope Baptist Church in Sonora, Texas, First Baptist Church in George West, Texas, and Spicewood Baptist Church in Spicewood, Texas. David also served churches as the Minister of Music. One of David’s favorite highlights was singing in the Masters Singers who performed with the San Antonio Symphony.
David was preceded in death by his parents, David Dean Prather and Estella Mae Prather. He is survived by his beloved wife, Sue Prather, of Spicewood, and by his sons, David Dean Prather III, of Spicewood and Nathanael Robert Prather, of Austin. He is also survived by his granddaughter, Melody Grace Prather, of Spicewood; his sister-in-law, Sharon Nettle, who assisted in his caretaking; as well as his loving cousins, nephews, nieces, great nephews, and great nieces. David and Sue celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary on Monday, November 29th, 2021.
Services will be held on December 7th, 2021, at 10:00 AM at Spicewood Baptist Church in Spicewood, Texas. His burial will be held at 2:30 PM in Luling City Cemetery in Luling, Texas. Serving as pallbearers will be David’s sons, David Prather and Nate Prather, his nephew, Jeff Cowley, his great nephew, Cristian Cowley, his nephew, Luis Sanchez, and his great friends, John Moulder and Johnny Wright. Harry Taplin, David’s lifelong friend, will be serving as an honorary pallbearer.
