Doris Laverne Taylor, of Horseshoe Bay, TX, went to be with the Lord on May 30, 2015 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. Memorial Services will be held at the Westside Church of Christ in Midland, TX on June 13, 2015 at 11:00 am. A graveside memorial will follow at the Gaines County Cemetery in Seminole.
Doris was born in Brownfield, TX on March 10, 1935 to Cecil and Opal Sweatt. Doris attended school in Seminole and Denver City. She married R. L. Fleming in 1953 and made her home in the Wellman and Seagraves area until the early 1970’s. She married C. E. Taylor of Rankin, TX in 1976 and lived there until they retired to the Midland area in 1981. Doris moved to Horseshoe Bay in 2014 to be near family.
Doris enjoyed many hobbies including gardening, oil painting, and quilting. Doris’s home photography business specialized in weddings, school, and family portraits. Her entrepreneurial drive led her to operate three retail businesses in Rankin, TX during the late 1970’s and early 1980’s, and later a gift and clothing shop in Midland, TX. She attended the University of Texas Permian Basin where she earned her BA in accounting at age 57.
Doris was a member of the Westside Church of Christ, 4410 West Illinois Avenue in Midland. Over the many years, she volunteered and was a member of several organizations from 4-H to Republican Women’s Organization. She regularly visited friends in senior living centers, nursing homes, and hospitals.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, C. E. Taylor, and a stepson, Bobby Joe Taylor. She is survived by two sisters, Anne Burton of Horseshoe Bay, Cleta Sander of Dallas; a daughter, Judy Barnes of Lakeway, and a son, Jim Fleming and his wife Cindy of Austin; grandchildren, Stacy Smead, Natalie and Brian Fleming; great-grandchildren, Ashton and Caden Smead; step-children, Gary Taylor, Kay Dugan, Rene Basham, Doug Taylor, and David Porter; her close companion, Harold Lucchi, and his daughters Greta and Gina; and special friends and relatives, Betty Holder, Quida Childers, Sarah Reid, Bob Sweatt, Reba Grandrud, Margie Fox, Bill Hopper, Carol Nasuhogla, Jean Satterfield, Ellen Luckie, Karol Klim, and so many more. Your cards, calls, and visits were cherished. Thank you all for your support during her illness.
