Homer Hampton Lawson, 85, a resident of Meadowlakes, Texas, passed away on July 17, 2012. He was born on October 19, 1926 in Wilson, Texas to Henry Gates and Lela (Woodfin) Lawson, the middle of three children. Homer lived in Lubbock until retiring to Meadowlakes in 1998. Homer attended Lubbock High School and Texas Technological College, where he played football for the Red Raiders. Homer’s studies at Tech were interrupted by World War II, where he served as a corporal in the U.S. Army and was deployed to the Philippines. Prior to his deployment, Homer’s older brother, Henry Neil, was killed during the war in a training exercise. Homer was discharged at the age of 19, and returned to Tech to resume his studies, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Science and Animal Husbandry.
Homer followed in his father’s footsteps and began farming and ranching. He owned Zachary-Lawson Feedlots, Lawson Feedlots, and Three C Cattle Company, and ranches in Colorado and New Mexico until semi-retiring to the ranch in Goldthwaite, Texas in 1998. Homer was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Lubbock and Marble Falls, the Texas Cattlemen’s Organization, National Cattlemen’s Organization, the Texas Cattle Feeders Association, and the Texas Tech Alumni organization.
Homer enjoyed hunting and was an avid fisherman, loving to fly fish for rainbow trout in the cold streams of Colorado, which he did over the years with family and friends. He piloted a single-engine Cessna for fifty years, flying his family back and forth to the Colorado and New Mexico ranches over the years, and to Ruidoso, NM where he and his family have owned a home for over 30 years and where he loved to ski. Homer began playing golf in his fifties, always enjoying a good game with his sons and friends.
Homer is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Freda Ann (Anthony) Lawson, his daughter, Julia Jan Lawson of Eureka, California, his son, Howard Lee Lawson of Dallas, Texas, his daughter, Beth Ann Hawkins of Austin, Texas, and his son and daughter-in-law, Jack Hampton Lawson and Pamela Denise Lawson of Austin, Texas, his sister and brother-in-law, Jane Robin Bowers and Robert L. Bowers of San Antonio, Texas, nephews Ronnie Holman, Gary Bowers, Lee Bowers and Henry Bowers, and by 10 grandchildren and 4 great grand-children.
He is predeceased by his parents, Henry Gates Lawson and Lela Woodfin Lawson, his brother, Henry Neil Lawson, and his daughter, Linda Carol Burnette.
Our family is so grateful for the loving care Homer received the entire time he stayed at Colonial Gardens of Austin. Also we would like to acknowledge Buckner Hospice for the exceptional care he received from the nurses and aides.
