
Houston Isiah ("Isaiah") Welch, 90 of Horseshoe Bay, TX went to be with the Lord on March 1, 2023 from an 8-month issue with his heart. His family and friends are deeply saddened. He was a true family man and the rock of the family. He will be sorely missed by all. He was born to Houston and Bennie Dee Growl ("Graul") on December 22, 1932 in the small town of Leroy, TX. He became a born-again Christian at the age of 13 due to the influence of his mother.
Houston entered Baylor University to pursue a degree in Journalism. After his freshman year, he decided to enlist in the Army, to follow in his father’s footsteps who fought in WWII. He was accepted into officer candidate school and received his commission after 2 years. He then decided to re-enter Baylor University and changed his major to Geology, which resulted in a Bachelor of Science degree. Houston worked for Pan American Petroleum, Amoco and 25 years with Fina Oil & Chemical, both offshore and onshore. He held the positions of Geophysicist at various levels, Manager and Exploration Advisor. He worked areas of Texas, Kansas, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alaska and Canada. After taking early retirement from Fina Oil & Chemical, Houston opened an oil and gas consulting company. After a couple of years, he expanded it to include exploration. At that time, his daughter Cynthia started working with him and they worked together for approximately 20 years. Houston loved participating in and watching sports. He loved golf and swimming. His 2 favorite golf courses were Kapalua on Maui and Ram Rock at Horseshoe Bay.
Houston is survived by his daughter, Cynthia Latham of Horseshoe Bay, TX; his cousin, Linda Fox of Pilot Point, TX; his cousin, Wanda Hibbetts (John) of Weatherford, TX; his cousin, Harvie Welch (Jana) of Crawford, TX; other relatives; and many members of his wife’s family, to include his brother-in-law, Harlan Maddox and his wife, Shirley Maddox of Magee, MS.
Houston is preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Jewel Grace Welch; his father and mother, Houston and Bennie Dee Welch; his paternal grandparents, John Samuel and Lillar Jane Welch; his maternal grandparents, Louis and Roxie Graul; his cousin, Loy McHargue; his cousin, Billy Tom White; and many more relatives.
Houston’s funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 15, 2023 at Marble Falls City Cemetery in Marble Falls, TX. Pastor Weldon French will be conducting the service.
