Friends are invited to wear blue (her favorite color) and share their memories of Lettie on Saturday, June 6 at 1 PM at Rice Memorial Chapel, with a reception in the Miner Room, Rice Memorial Center, following.
Lettie was born August 26, 1925 and was raised in Key West where her father, James B. (Sully) Sullivan, owned the welding shop. He was a close friend of Ernest Hemingway. Her mother, Letitia, was a nurse from Ireland. Lettie married Robert E. (Tim or Ty) Tyler, in Key West in 1950. His position as an advisor to the Turkish government took the family to Ankara from 1954 to 1957. He was director of the Office of Naval Research in Bermuda from 1959 to 1962. In Bermuda, Lettie was a Gray Lady, a Girl Scout leader, and a hostess to visiting scientists.
The family moved to Houston in 1963 and bought a home in Meyerland, where Lettie lived until she moved to Marble Falls in 2014. As a board member of Volunteers In Public Schools, she advocated testing students for perceptual disabilities. She raised money for trees for Meyerland Park, was on the county Democratic Executive Committee, and chaired the Women’s Political Caucus. She had A-negative blood and donated plasma regularly to produce a vaccine to protect babies against Rh disease. In 1991, Planned Parenthood gave her its Silver Spirit Award for her work organizing patient escorts.
She sold real estate for Century 21-Dewberry, managed the office at Art Resources, and worked for City Councilman Vince Ryan. Her family thanks Midge Levis, Dr. Charles Holmsten and staff, and the staffs of Home Instead, Circle of Hands, and Granite Mesa for their loving care. In her memory, please consider giving blood or making a contribution to Planned Parenthood, Corridor Rescue or another cause that was dear to her.
