Norma Doris Jackson Cornett passed from this life into glory to her eternal home to be with the Lord in the early morning of Monday, December 3, 2018, having lived 93 years on this earth. Norma was born on September 3, 1925, in Laurel, Mississippi. If you knew Norma, then you can attest that she was the epitome of the classy, gentle southern lady who was always ready to give you that sweet smile and a kind word. She was beautiful – inside and out.
Norma was married to Ford Derwood Cornett, also from Laurel, for 20 years with whom she had four daughters – Sandy, Missy, Suzy and Denise, and two sons Derry and Tommy. Derwood sadly died suddenly in September 1966 when her sons were age six and four. She never remarried, but led a full life spending time with each of her children and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was known by many names – Norma, Momma, Nonnie, Grandmama, Grandmother, Grandma, Miss Norma, Sister, Aunt and Auntie. In her school years she was called Sally by all her friends!
This remarkable woman had a zest for life that could not be extinguished, getting her joy from loving her family and looking at God’s beautiful creations. Some of her best memories are of spending time with nature, whether it was touring around the states, and especially seeing the wild flowers across this beautiful hill country. She loved it here. We are so very grateful to Michael and Suzy Mitchell for giving her a warm, loving, Christ-centered home for the last two years, and for the many rides through the country. I think she loved doing that more than anything.
Our hearts will mourn for this extraordinary woman who was our friend, our champion and the matriarch of the Cornett Clan.
Miss Norma, your song may have ended, but your melody will go on forever. Thank you, Lord, for the time you gave us with her.
