Norma Jean Cummings Woodard, age 92, passed away on August 11, 2021, in the presence of family and was reunited with husband Robert in Heaven. She had resided at Beehive Assisted Living since his death on April 11, 2019.
Norma was born in Coleman, Texas, on October 30, 1928, daughter of Raymond Fredrick Cummings (1902-1978) and Linnie Grace Rutledge (1904-1964) both originally from Brownwood. She graduated from Coleman schools in 1946 where she met future husband Robert Woodard. They married May 2, 1948, at the home of her parents at 319 N. Nueces. Daughters of the marriage were Linda Gayle (1950), Marsha Lee (stillborn 1953) and Ginger Ann (1955). Robert built a home on Post Street, across the street from his parents Allen & Bessie Lou Woodard and around the corner from Norma’s parents. Both Robert and Norma were avid bowlers, but Norma was especially good and won many awards with write-ups in the local newspaper.
In 1965 they moved to Granite Shoals Lake near Marble Falls, Texas, for better home building opportunities for Robert. He built them a home near the lake and continued to build homes in the area for many years. They were long time members of First Baptist Church, Fellowship Church, and Marble Falls Senior Center.
Norma was a homemaker then later worked at Highland Lakes Bank in Kingsland for 10 years. After her retirement, she and Robert traveled to Ruidoso, “the valley” in South Texas, the Rockies and the deep South in their trailer. She enjoyed golf, getting together with friends to play games, watching the Dallas Cowboys with her husband, collecting jokes, and was a great cook. Later in life she became an avid painter and sold many of her beautiful bluebonnet landscapes and southwest art through the Marble Falls Art Guild.
After living in Marble Falls for 53 years, due to failing health they moved to Coppell, Texas, to live with daughter Ginger and husband Steve Rogers. They missed Marble Falls but enjoyed being around family every day. Norma was active in the local Senior Center, sold painted bluebonnet Christmas ornaments, and played bingo every Friday. She played solitaire on the iPad, messaged family, loved dog and cat videos, and in her 90’s “googled” everything to see what was going on in the world.
Norma outlived all of her siblings by many years – Billy Jack Cummings 1957; Peggy Joyce Mobley 1971; JoAnn Turner 1980; Rose McCleskey 1982 and Carolyn Sue Hix in 2007.
Besides the loss of her husband and infant daughter, Norma lost her beloved daughter Linda Gayle on Feb 1, 2015, in Marble Falls, and missed her so much.
She is survived by Gayle’s 4 daughters Jana Davies and children Abrianna & Kaden; Megan Theberge and 3 children Orin, Trysten, Jocelynn of League City, TX; Courtney & Randy Mize and 3 children Nathan & Brandice Garcia and daughter Nova, Mikaella Garcia and son Camdyn, and Vanessa Garcia all of Granite Shoals; Dana Mule; and grandson Morris McManigal.
Norma is survived by daughter Ginger & Steve Rogers of Coppell Tx; grandsons Kyle Rogers & Kristin Rogers of Roanoke, Tx; Eric & Jillian Rogers of Irving; Kurt & Sierra Rogers and great-granddaughter Quinn of Coppell; nephews Steve Woodard of Abilene; Richard Cummings of Sarasota, FL; Bob McCleskey of Liberty Hill; Rocky and Roland Turner of Arkansas; and niece Jo Runde of Omaha, NE.
Funeral services will be Saturday, August 21 at 10 o’clock at the Clements-Wilcox Funeral home in Marble Falls, officiated by grandson Kyle Rogers. Burial will at 3:30 pm at the family gravesite in the Coleman City Cemetery, Coleman, Texas. Pallbearers: Kyle Rogers, Eric Rogers, Kurt Rogers, Bob McCleskey, Steve Woodard, and Randy Mize.
